Judge's Comments:
1. The light-colored pine needle is very small, but it has the element of this photograph that holds the viewer's eye. Overall composition is good. The vertical pine leaves (up and down) are a bit soft, but this judge does not find that to be a major distraction. This is a very nice, enjoyable image.
2. In this picture I love the convergent symmetry of the branches, the texture of the needles, and the nearly monochromatic tonality. This image would have been even stronger for me if all the needles were in focus, or if those that could not be brought into focus were removed. I notice this was shot at f/3.5, so a smaller f/stop might be all that’s necessary to address my focus suggestion. Nevertheless, I really like this image and appreciate the artistry it conveys.
